How to Clean Commercial Glued Down Carpet

Commercial carpets work hard. All day long, they welcome your customers into your building. Over time, that heavy foot traffic creates stains, wear spots, and discoloration. To keep your carpet looking fresh, you need to clean it regularly.

The question is how to do that.

At ServiceMaster Restoration by Zaba, we specialize in cleaning commercial, glued-down carpets in Chicago, IL and the suburbs, and we’ve helped hundreds of businesses in the area keep their operations looking good.

In the post, we’ll share a few of our top tips for removing spills, spots, and discoloration from your commercial carpets.

Let’s get started.

5 Steps to Clean a Commercial Glued Down Carpet

Whether you’re running a new business or an established, brick-and-mortar store, these tips will help your carpet look great once more:

Step 1: vacuum all of the carpeting thoroughly

Before you can start the extraction process, you need to remove surface debris. The best way to do this is to use a HEPA vacuum to suck up loose soil. We recommend HEPA vacuums for a few reasons.

HEPA (which stands for high-efficiency particulate air) filters are mechanical air filters that utilize a very fine mesh to trap tiny pollutants. The testing standards for genuine HEPA filters are 99.97% of particulates at the size of 0.3 microns.

When you use a HEPA vacuum, the filter will lift away particles of pollen, pet dander, dust mites, and smoke. Removing these allergens from your space helps improve air quality and decrease allergy symptoms for your customers.

As you use the vacuum, make sure to cover every square inch of your carpet – even going under furniture like benches, chairs, and desks. This will make your professional carpet cleaning much more effective.

Step 2: Spray pre-spray on the carpet

This step is a lot like pre-treating a tough stain on your favorite shirt. When you pre-spray your carpet, you break up and loosen up grease, stains, ground-in soil, and more. When it’s time to clean the carpet, the fibers will release debris more easily.

For best results, add pre-spray after you vacuum. After applying the pre-spray, wait 10-15 minutes for the solution to penetrate the fibers of the carpet.

Using a handheld carpet brush, work the pre-spray gently into the fibers and agitate the dirt.

Step 3: Steam clean the carpet

Next, it’s time to clean your commercial carpet. While there are many ways to do this, we like to add a powder detergent. We place this detergent inside our truck-mounted machine and apply it to your carpet.

We prefer this type because it breaks up dirt and lifts tough stains 10x better than its liquid detergent counterpart.

Step 4:  Shampoo the carpet

If there are dark stains in the highly-trafficked areas of your carpet, we use a pH seven shampoo to resolve the discoloration. Used in conjunction with a rotary scrubber, this shampoo application also removes foot patterns from the carpet.

Unlike harsh cleaners, which can break down the fibers of the carpet, this shampoo has a neutral pH, which means it will stay in the rug and keep working long after the initial application. The shampoo also neutralizes high-pH pre-spray and detergent.

The result is a carpet that looks bright, plush, and lustrous.

Step 5: Install air movers to speed up the drying process

While this part is optional, many business owners want to expedite the drying process as much as possible. To help with this, we can install large, commercial-grade air movers to circulate air and remove moisture rapidly.

How Do You Fix a Flooded Commercial Glued Down Carpet?

Flooding can happen due to broken pipes, backed up drains, severe storms, and more. Unfortunately, if your carpet was contaminated by sewage water during a flood, it can’t be saved. In this case, let a professional company remove and replace the carpet for you.

If the flood only involved greywater, though, it’s usually possible to safely extract the moisture without replacing the carpeting. This is possible because glued-down carpet, unlike traditional carpeting, does not have padding underneath.

In regular carpeting, this padding would need to be replaced, and would also require an antimicrobial to be sprayed to prevent mold.

If your business has a glued-down carpet, you can extract the moisture with professional carpet water extraction equipment. In some ways, this makes glued-down carpet much more convenient than regular carpeting.

How Often Should I Clean My Glued Down Carpeting?

Your business is an investment, and you want to keep your commercial carpet looking good. To do this, we recommend cleaning the carpet in high-traffic areas at least twice or three times per year. In low-traffic areas, once a year will be plenty.
