Professional Grout Cleaning Tips | Maid to Shine | Your Best & Local House Cleaning Colorado Springs

It’s not surprising that showers, consistently used day after day, eventually find themselves in need of desperate attention. If grout between our shower tiles are not routinely cleaned, they begin collecting a nasty collection of slime, dirt, and grime that needs a thorough scrubbing.

The methods used for cleaning grout is relatively easy, although it is a time-consuming task. The grout around every tile needs to be scrubbed, and depending on the size of your shower and the number of tiles, it can take a little bit of time.

The Tools and Supplies

The tools you need to give your grout a good scrub aren’t expensive or fancy. They’re easy to find around your home or at a local store.

  • A tile brush
  • A small, old toothbrush
  • A natural, all-purpose cleaner and baking soda
  • A cup to rinse the grout and tiles
  • A squeegee to dry off the tiles after rinsing

Spray the grout in your shower generously with the all-purpose cleaner. As always, we recommend using a natural, all green cleaner. This is especially important in bathrooms where the space may be smaller and there is less ventilation. Breathing in too many fumes from chemical cleaners can be a health hazard. Once you’ve sprayed the grout, let it soak in for several minutes. This will make it easier to scrub.

Once you’ve allowed the cleaner to soak into the grout, take the tile brush and begin scrubbing the grout. Scrub with enough pressure to really get in there and work up the grime. It’s a good idea to scrub from one side to the other, top to bottom. This helps insure that you’ve scrubbed all the grout in the shower or tub. If the grime seems to be a little bit more stubborn, use the baking soda as safe scrubbing agent, and use the old toothbrush to really get into the small crevices. Keep in mind that grout is a porous material, and some staining from previous grime may be permanent.

Once you’re satisfied that you’ve thoroughly cleaned the grout thoroughly rinse the grout. Wash all of the grime and remaining baking soda down the drain, and then quickly squeegee the tiles dry.

These simple steps make it easy to keep your grout looking spotless. Don’t forget Maid to Shine is happy to come do a comprehensive clean of your home from top to bottom, if you find yourself in need of a little help or without enough time!
